Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long does it take to install Get Data Safe?
It takes only a couple of minutes to install from CD, or slightly longer if installing off the internet. Using the very simple installer, it's so quick and easy anyone can do it. Additionally, we provide phone support for installations where necessary. (Some users are also eligible for in-house installation. Please contact us to see if you qualify).
Q: How do I configure Get Data Safe?
The best thing about Get Data Safe is that it comes pre-configured. The only thing you need to do is enter your user details and select which files to backup. A full help file is also provided, complete with easy-to-follow instructions and screenshots to help you get the most from your Get Data Safe Online Backup subscription.
Q: What files are backed up?
Get Data Safe comes with a pre-configured list of auto-selected files, designed to help pick out the most commonly backed up files. However, we encourage you to customise the list of files being backed up to ensure every file you need is backed up (and no extra files are backed up, saving time during the backup process).
Q: Can I change what I back up?
Yes. Even after you've used Get Data Safe to backup your files, you can quickly and easily alter which files you'd like to backup in future.
Q: Is this just like copying all my files to CD / DVD?
No. There are a myriad of reasons why remote backup systems like Get Data Safe offsite backup solution are superior to simply copying files to removable media like CD's. Just a handful of the reasons are:
- Full, easy to browse catalogue of backed up files
- No hardware cost
- No media cost
- Guaranteed restorability
- Automated process (no labour cost and no human error)
- Fully managed system
Q: How do I restore files?
Simply open your Get Data Safe client (program) and select Restore. You will be presented with an easy-to-follow folder-tree view. Either select All Files, or choose individual files and click Restore. Done!
Q: What if we already have a tape backup system?
Using a tape backup system and a remote backup system offers the best of both worlds. Critical files, like billing, customer contact files and databases can be kept on the online backup system. While, the tape system can be used to create a full backup of the entire system once or twice a month, instead of on a daily basis. The tapes and drive will last longer and require less maintenance. The online backup system can provide a quick and easy way to retrieve critical files and databases without the hassle of searching through tapes. Additionally, the offsite / online backup service is guaranteed restorable, unlike tapes (which have a high failure rate).
Q: What if we already have a Zip drive?
Frankly, we believe that it is not optimal for most users and do not recommend the use of a zip or other removable disk media for backup. An online backup service is completely automated and has the required file redundancy to protect important data. The only safe way to use a zip drive for backup is to have multiple disks and make the same backup multiple times. That way when one of the disk fails you are still protected.
Q: How long will an online backup take?
Users with high-speed broadband internet connections should find this service comparable or faster than tape drives. Even dial up users will be able to do incremental backups in thirty to sixty minutes. But because the backup happens automatically at night, you don't need to pay someone to sit and watch it / swap CD's.
Q: Onsite, Offsite - What's The Difference?
Basically, remote backups work like regular tape backups, with one important difference. Instead of sending backups to a tape drive or other media attached to the computer being backed up, a remote backup sends encrypted file data over the internet to a computer file storage system safely off-site. This puts your backup beyond the reach of fires, floods, theft and accident in our secure data centre.
This usually happens at night while your business is closed and nobody is using the computers. It's completely automatic. In fact, you may forget it's even working.
Q: Why Are Online Backups Considered More Beneficial?
The data is immediately stored off-site using an automated backup system. Also, only an internet connection is needed, completely eliminating the need for expensive backup equipment and media. And, since the system is automated, manual labour is eliminated.
Q: How Secure Are Online Backups?
Very. All files are encrypted using super secure 128-bit encryption methods giving the user their own personal encryption code which is only known by the user of the system. The encryption technologies we utilise are Twofish, Triple DES, Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).
Q: What is encryption?
Encryption is basically a mathematical formula that scrambles a data file. And the only way to unscramble it is with the encryption code.
